About us
Ashoka is a global,
non-profit organization founded in 1980 with a mission to launch social
entrepreneurs worldwide. Social
entrepreneurs use their vision, creativity, and commitment to advance
innovative solutions to social and environmental problems just as a business
entrepreneur applies similar qualities to growing a business. Ashoka
invests in these social entrepreneurs at a critical time in their careers
- after the crystallization of the idea but before its visible success.
These investments
yield social and environmental returns that positively affect the lives
of millions of people.
Since its founding, Ashoka has invested
in over 1,200 social entrepreneurs addressing major social problems from
economic development and education reform to health care, human rights,
and the environment. These
Ashoka Fellows work in forty countries throughout Africa, Asia, Central
Europe, Latin America, and the United States.
With over 200 Ashoka Fellows working
on environmental issues, Ashoka is well positioned to identify patterns
common to successful environmental solutions. Launched
in 1998, the Environmental Innovations Initiative ("EII") is
designed to work with Fellows to distill crosscutting principles that
drive effective environmental efforts and transfer this knowledge to practitioners
operating in this arena. Thus
far, 4 interlocking principles have been captured that are now being vetted
and applied in the field.
Our
"Environment Innovations" Principles
The four EII Principles are listed below.
We are
currently documenting the best implementation strategies for these principles
employed by Ashoka Fellows around the world.
1. Get the Negotiating Framework Right
Strong, enforceable laws and regulations
that value public participation can encourage sound decision making about
resource use.
2. Change Economic Incentives
Protecting the environment is often seen
as an economic burden. Contrary
to this perception, innovative income generation strategies can create
new sources of revenue that sustain natural resources and protect human
health.
3. Use the Power of Information
Environmentally harmful products and
activities often persist because communities that bear these environmental
burdens do not have the information to understand the extent of the harm
or to evaluate more sustainable alternatives.
4. Engage People's Values and Culture
Local cultures and traditions can be
a stumbling block or a great benefit for environmental protection efforts.
Contouring
strategies around local traditions and cultures can minimize hurdles and
maximize local support for an environmental protection scheme.
