Hello everyone,
My name is Kunal Mehta and I am currently reading towards a MSc in Environmental Change and Management at the University of Oxford. This is a one year Masters (taught) Programme, which is run by the Environmental Change Institute (ECI), a semi-autonomous research institute within the School of Geography and Environment. Please visit our website (http://www.eci.ox.ac.uk). The ECI has six research topics, namely Biodiversity, Climate Change, Energy, Conservation, Human Ecology, and Land Degradation. The ECI is starting a new research programme looking at ‘energy in the developing world’.
The MSc is the most popular and competitive postgraduate science course in the University of Oxford, which means that admission to this course is highly sought-after. This is the tenth year of the course and to date over 40 nationalities have been represented in this course. People completing this course usually move on to become policy-makers, researchers, academics, consultants, etc. and this information can all be found in the ECI website.
I am majoring in ‘Energy and the Environment’ and ‘Integrated Water Management’ with a minor in ‘Participatory Approaches to Environmental Management’. My dissertation (3-month research project) will be looking to quantify the socio-economic and environmental benefits (or otherwise) of a Solar Home Systems Progamme in Karnataka, India. This will involve significant fieldwork and the use of a quantification model developed by researchers at Imperial College, London funded the Department for International Development (DFID) UK. The course as a special highlight includes four fieldtrips which enable students to study environmental management in practice.
I hope this has been useful to prospective students and I am most happy to answer any queries about this course or other options. My first degree was a Bachelors in Environmental Studies, Adelaide University (Australia). I will be graduating in October 2004 and will be looking to work in the international development sector after that. I would greatly appreciate any leads or suggestions.
Regards,
Kunal Mehta
