GE Enjoys Nature’s Bounty
By JEFF IMMELT

A YEAR AGO, I REVIEWED General Electric’s “ecomagination” initiative with Barron’s editorial page. As I outlined our plans to develop and sell more advanced environmental and energy products, I sensed skepticism. Barron’s wasn’t alone: Some environmentalists asked: “Why doesn’t GE dredge the Hudson River to remove PCBs?” A few of our employees believed we were caving in to these same environmentalists. And investors said, appropriately enough, “Show me the money.”

They wanted our aid to commercialize new technology that improved their energy efficiency, to modernize their environmental performance and to comply with stricter global regulations while staying competitive.

Our ecomagination initiative provided answers for customers stretching around the world and across our business portfolio. And while the strong response we are already seeing is gratifying—$17 billion in orders last year alone—it will prove even more richly rewarding for our shareholders.

Ecomagination was designed to develop new technologies to meet customers’ needs in an increasingly energy- and carbon-constrained world. It came from our belief that we can support our customers and make money doing it. We said green can be green, and we are proving it.
