Work Opportunities with Vasundhara, Orissa
Work Opportunities with Vasundhara, Orissa
Vasundhara is a research and action group working on environmental conservation and sustainable livelihood issues in Orissa, with special focus on community forestry and forest-people interface. Our activities include research, policy analysis and advocacy, and networking in the thematic areas of Community Forestry, Forest based Livelihoods & Economic Democratization, Land Access, Rights and Tenure, and Environment and Biodiversity Conservation (for details see: http://www.vasundharaorissa.org). Orissa, the poorest state in India, stands at the vortex of rapid changes in its developmental and environmental contexts. It is threatened with the classic syndromes of extractive exploitation of natural resources by global capital in consonance with ineffective regulatory governance, compromised and democratically unaccountable ruling class and a voiceless majority of powerless citizens. However, at the same time, Orissa also offers glimpses of alternative and more just paradigms of natural resources governance, as evidenced by the more than ten thousands community forestry initiative protecting and managing forests or the many environmental movements. Thus Orissa presents a unique and challenging environment for individuals who would like to contribute to progressive social change. We hope to provide space for self-driven and committed people who would like to work on these issues in Orissa. Vasundhara’s work culture is non-hierarchical, democratic and transparent and seeks to nurture individual and organizational learning and creativity to address the emerging challenges to conservation and sustainable livelihoods in the state of Orissa.
Programme Support Manager
The position of Programme Support Manager is a newly created leadership position, to support and coordinate different thematic groups, as well as help enhance institutional environment for individual creativity and team-work. The position requires prior expertise in at least one of the core areas of our interventions namely community based natural resources management, environmental and biodiversity conservation, and sustainable livelihoods issues as well as experience at a leadership position in a non-profit or research organization. The person should be self-driven and have the skills and expertise to lead a multi-disciplinary team. The position offers an opportunity to work with a team of highly committed, driven and experienced professionals to address issues relating to conservation and livelihood interface.
Programme Officer (Advocacy and Policy Research)
The key responsibilities shall include policy analysis and research on natural resources governance issues and conceptualization and design of policy advocacy and media campaign strategies. About five years relevant work-experience in policy and legal issues in natural resources governance and advocacy campaigns is desirable.
Programme Officer (Biodiversity Conservation & Ecological Research)
The responsibility for this position includes supervising as well as undertaking ongoing ecological research in Vasundhara that includes preparation of community resource management plans, facilitation of community bio-diversity registers, NTFP inventory and sustainable harvest practices. Other emerging areas of work include biodiversity mapping, study of existing wildlife protection areas, impacts of present conservation policies and practices on local livelihoods, possible alternate conservation strategies etc. Master’s degree in Environmental Science/ Forestry/ Natural Resources Conservation (or related field), and a minimum of two years experience in research on ecological issues and conservation is desired.
Programme Officer (Environmental Conservation)
Given the massive onset of industries and mining projects in the state of Orissa, there is a growing need for an environmental watchdog group that is able to demand for a more environmentally responsible behavior from the industries and “development” planners in the state. A laboratory to undertake water and air quality monitoring and address issues of industrial pollution is being set up at Vasundhara. The Programme Officer will join the team on Environmental Conservation working on industrial pollution, health hazards and campaigns on environmental issues in the state. Master’s degree in Environmental Science or Technology/ Forestry/ Natural Resources Conservation (or related field), and a minimum of two years relevant work experience is desired.
