PREVENTIVE ENVIRONMENT MANAGEMENT AT UNIVERSITY OF HYDERABAD
About the University
The University of Hyderabad since its inception
on 2nd October 1974 has established itself as a premier centre for post-graduate
study and research. Set in idyllic settings of 2200 acres of vast expanse
of land with abundance of greenery, exquisite rock formations, and natural
lakes, it provides an ideal environment.
The University has 8 schools of study, School
of Management studies being the latest addition. The strength of this
University lies in its faculty, The faculty of University of Hyderabad
has made their mark Nationally and Internationally in their respective
areas, and excelled in teaching by introducing innovative courses and
teaching methods. The School of Management studies borrows expertise from
various Schools for its guest lectures and workshops, thus providing a
cope for wider interaction.
Mission
The mission of the School is to provide first
rate education and state-of-the-art training to its M.B.A students, with
the view to develop excellence in management concepts and practical skills,
including those needed for overall business and functional strategy planning
and implementation, leadership, and in the context of the emerging national
and global scenarios, challenges and opportunities.
The Post-graduate programme in Management
The programme addresses issues pertinent
to management and organizations with academic rigour, by bringing in areas
of expertise to bear on real-world problems in private and government
organizations. The training endeavours to aid the students in learning
to adopt an equally rigorous approach while at the same time understanding
the whole context of the given problem, and its interaction with external
environment. Such an approach encourages the students to draw on the range
of expertise in the School, and the University, relevant to the fields
of study.
The two-year MBA programme comprises four
semesters.
The first year programme is designed to give
the students a broad perspective of all the functional areas in management
and to integrate the theory and practice of management. The second year
of the programme comprises some specialised and advanced courses and specialisation
through electives and project work.
The SMS advantage Institutional tie-up
The SMS has entered into collaboration with
Environment Protection, Training and Research Institute (EPTRI), Hyderabad
to offer a concentrated specialisation in Preventive Environmental Management
(PEM) in the third and fourth semesters of the M.B.A. programme.
The collaboration is professionally supported
by the Lund University, Sweden and Twente University, the Netherlands,
and financially supported by the European Union, Brussels. The specialisation
will enable the selected students to get conceptual and practical insights
into Managerial, Strategic, Economic and Technical aspects of cleaner
products and production processes in National and Global perspectives.
It will, thus enable the future managers
to benefit from professional opportunities in this very important emerging
area of Business, Economic and Development concern at National and Global
levels.

The students have to take 4 core courses
along with 2 electives. Project work has to be done in any functional
area or a combination of functional areas, focused on a selected sector,
eg., corporate manufacturing infrastructural and institutional services,
enterpreneurship, environment etc.
The students had also taken up a eight week
summer project work in various organisations like BPL Ltd, BILT chemicals,
Pepsi Foods, HSBC, Academy of HRD etc.
